Our Adoption Is Guaranteed
I can understand Isaiah 1:2 a little more now as a parent. “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the LORD has spoken. Children I have reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me.”
I can imagine the utter shock and pain that would come from the following scenario — We have raised and brought up our two girls — day after day of toiling the ground of parenting, month after month of sacrificial provision, year after year of teaching and instruction and then one day… rebellion and revolt. Oh, the pain of a wayward child that forsakes the loving care of parents! A child in open defiance of a parent is appalling to such a degree that the heavens and the earth are called upon to listen and take note.
I think about this verse in light of what we heard this past week in Ephesians 1:3-5. (Sermon: Adopted By God, John Erickson March 18, 2018) We, in Christ, have been adopted as children to God the Father. What will keep us from ultimately rebelling and revolting in open defiance? Will it be the works of our hands that will keep us? What was so refreshing to hear on Sunday is that our adoption is guaranteed to go through! Our adoption is finalized! He predestined us for adoption to himself to the praise of his glorious grace. He adopted us for his glory and since he will be glorified, our adoption is completely secured. Now we are free to live as children instead of working to be children. He will keep us. He will hold us fast. What he started in us he will complete. We are one day closer to Romans 8:18-25!
Hopeful in Christ,
