Listen, Learn, Lament and Live
Let me remind you of Pastor John’s helpful application of Ephesians 2:11-22 and add one more ‘L’ to the list. In light of the work of Christ which has killed the hostility between us and God as well as between us and one another, it has reconciled us both vertically and horizontally. We are encouraged to continue this pursuit of racial reconciliation. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to introduce people who don’t know this work and have been either perpetrators of racism or recipients of racism to a community where reconciliation is experienced and sought after? How can we do this? Pastor John told us to listen, learn and lament. That will keep us busy in our endeavor for racial reconciliation but let me add another ‘L’ — Live.
I am thinking of Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Let us be quick to listen to some difficult truths. Let us learn in humility as those who don’t have all of life figured out. Let us lament and grieve over those hard lessons, conversations and experiences felt by others. Let’s also live by faith in Christ. A life lived by faith in the Son of God supplies us richly with all we need to listen, learn and lament well.
